The E-myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to Do About It [3rd Revised edition] by Michael E. Gerber

Michael Gerber and the Emyth philosophy has been one of the leading business books for nearly 20 years.

The book is well written and clearly focused on small business owners or those contemplating setting up their first business.

Gerber’s business has helped hundreds of small companies improve their profitability, but more importantly it’s provided its owners a clearer vision of how to act and view their own role in the business.

E-myth is based on the principal that most small business owners don’t have a clue how to become a real entrepreneur and enjoy the success that can accompany it. Statistics have proven that majority of small businesses fail within the first couple of years and the lucky few that do manage to survive are highly likely to fail within 5 years of being set up – not happy reading!!

but…. and this is a big BUT …there is another way. The business owner should view himself as the strategic planner within the business, not as most business owners find themselves doing actually working within the business and mundane tasks. Through a series of exercises, Gerber explains what is necessary to completely systemise your business.

The concept is simple but profound. What do successful businesses like MacDonald’s and Dominos Pizza have in common?

They are franchised businesses who have detailed operations manuals that clearly define every task within the businesses leaving zero ambiguity.

The other big “Ah-ha Moment” is that as a business owner you need to have ‘vision’, and that ‘vision’ needs to be clear. This will give you focus to take your business to the next level.

Don’t be put off by the fact that this book was published in the mid nineties; it has certainly stood the test of time and is highly recommended.
