Housing for over-55s in Short Supply says ARLA Member

Peter Girling, chairman of Girling Retirement Rentals and ARLA member, has recently been trying to raise awareness of the grave lack of rental accommodation suitable for the over-55 age group. According to Mr Girling, by the year 2030 more than one third of the UK population will be over the age of 55 and if the UK is to accommodate the older generation with suitable properties then the number available needs to increase by a staggering 70%.

At present, a lot of over-55s continue to live in properties that are bigger than their needs but because there are few suitable smaller properties for them to rent they remain where they are. The availability of bungalows for those with limited mobility is also inadequate, says Girling.

Even those over-55s who manage to find a property more suitable for their needs tend to remain where they are though, simply because they are offered no incentive to downsize.
Mr Girling is calling for more mid-range private rental accommodation to be made available specifically for the over-55s; his thinking being that not only would the older generation be more comfortable but a lot of family-sized housing would become available for those who need it.
